Lights on After School
This October, more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans will celebrate Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide event organized by the Afterschool Alliance to rally support for afterschool programs. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County will be celebrating the afterschool programs at their 62 after-school sites during Lights On Afterschool. This nationwide event calls attention to the importance of afterschool programs and the resources required to keep the lights on and the doors open.
Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. The Open House and Club Tours will celebrate the achievements of afterschool students and draw attention to the need for more afterschool programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon. "Lights On Afterschool celebrates the skills students learn at our afterschool programs," said Zane Smith, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. "It is a powerful reminder that afterschool programs keep children safe, inspire them to learn, and relieve working parents of worries about how their children spend their afternoons. Unfortunately, too many kids are unsupervised and exposed to crime or other risks each afternoon. "
