Summer Jobs Program

Are you a high school teen, at least 15 years of age, looking for your first job?

The BGCKC Summer Jobs Program is a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County and Pacific Gas Electric Company (PG&E) and other community partners. Since the inception of the program in 2013, nearly 1,500 local teens have received work force skills and 278 teens have received a paid job (intern). This is the sixth year that the BGCKC Summer Jobs Program is bringing the benefits of job training to youth and businesses in Kern County.

WHY

To provide teens support and guidance in setting career goals and improving their employability skills.

WHO

High School teens ages 15 to 18.

WHAT

CareerLaunch is a premier job-readiness and career-preparation program that offers a variety of activities to hone decision-making, problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities — important skills for workplace success. Youth get the opportunity to explore various careers based on their interests and talents, determine the corresponding educational path they need to pursue, and map out a plan for their future. Teens will also learn helpful resources such as resume creation, the importance of cover letters, and proper techniques for interviewing.

Participants will have the opportunity to choose to attend classes at either the E.L. Jack & Monica Armstrong Youth Center or at Suburu Elementary. Teens that successfully complete the “Career Launch” classes will be offered a opportunity to interview for a position (6-week) summer internships with local businesses including PG&E and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County.
